West Kazakhstan — Mangystau

Nine ways to see the region travelers call "Mars on Earth" — chalk-white canyons, salt plateaus, underground mosques, and a steppe that looks like nothing else on the planet. Pick the length that fits your trip; every version is led personally by Diana.

1 Region 2–7 Days Small Group or Private
Why Mangystau

A desert that used to be an ocean floor.

Mangystau sits on Kazakhstan's Caspian coast — a peninsula of chalk mountains, dry canyons, and salt-white plateaus left behind when an ancient sea receded. The result is scenery that looks lunar, Martian, and prehistoric all at once, dotted with underground mosques and necropolises carved by Sufi hermits centuries ago.

Below are nine ways to experience it, from a fast two-day dash to Bozzhira to the full seven-day circuit. Every itinerary is a starting point — I adjust pacing, camp nights, and sites based on who's traveling and when.

2 Days · 1 NightBozzhira

2-Day Bozzhira Expedition

The fastest way in — a straight shot to Mangystau's most photographed valley, with one night camped beneath its chalk-white amphitheater.

  • Bozzhira's canyon amphitheater and the "Valley of Castles" rock formations
  • Sunset and sunrise light over the white peaks — the best time to see them
  • Overnight in a yurt camp or tents right by the valley

2 Days · 1 NightTorysh · Airakty · Bozzhira

2-Day Torysh & Airakty

Same short timeframe, more variety — the stone balls of Torysh and the serrated ridge of Airakty on the way to a Bozzhira overnight.

  • Torysh, the "Valley of Stone Balls" — perfectly round boulders scattered across the steppe
  • Airakty canyon, nicknamed "Dragon's Ridge" for its spine-like rock formations
  • Overnight at Bozzhira with sunset over the valley

3-Day Torysh & Airakty Expedition

The same three landmarks as the 2-day version, but with room to actually explore each one rather than drive past it.

  • A full day dedicated to Airakty's "Dragon's Ridge" — the whole ridgeline, not just the viewpoint
  • Extra time at Torysh to walk among the stone balls at your own pace
  • Two nights camped in the field — sunset and sunrise at Bozzhira

Mangystau's other side — a white salt plateau above turquoise mineral lakes, and an underground necropolis carved into the rock by Sufi hermits.

  • Tuzbair's salt-marl "moon terraces" overlooking mineral-blue lakes
  • Karaman-Ata's underground mosque and necropolis, still tended by local caretakers
